But what can you actually do in Rosenheim for a whole day?

I went there for the first time this year, but have been back several times since then. The reason for this is the eye clinic where I had my laser eye surgery. Yesterday was my last check-up appointment, so I decided to give Rosenheim a real chance as a day trip destination.

A day in Rosenheim – a guide

If you are travelling from Austria, as I am, Rosenheim is easily accessible by train. It is only a 15-minute walk from the main station to Max-Josefs-Platz.

Well, first thing in the morning, I was hungry. So off to a

Breakfast

For my first meal, I chose Aran , located right in the centre. The warm, wood-panelled atmosphere immediately makes you feel at home. Large communal tables for sitting and standing add to the cosy feel.
Aran is self-service. To order, go to the far end of the restaurant and stop at the long counter with its many spreads. Behind it, large loaves of bread are lined up against the wall. This is where you order your bread and drinks. I had a buttered bread roll with wafer-thin slices of prosciutto crudo and an extra-large cup of cappuccino. At the table, you can really enjoy your breakfast with a view of the colourful crowd and chilled music.

Shopping

On the way from the train station to the city centre, you inevitably walk along Münchener Straße. From here to Max-Josefs-Platz, Rosenheim is a shopping paradise. However, this route is mainly home to internationally known chains. If you want to discover small shops, you have to stroll through the alleys of the city centre. I discovered three really delightful shops:

Goldstück Dirndl – beautiful, simple dirndls (traditional Bavarian and Austrian dresses), handmade in Rosenheim

Tausendschöne Lieblingsstücke – café and ceramics studio in one. Here you can make your own ceramic tableware, paint it and have it fired, or choose from the many cute finished pieces.

Guided tour of the tower of St. Nicholas Church

St. Nicholas Church in Rosenheim is the dominant city church on Ludwigsplatz, right next to Max-Josefs-Platz. Since its renovation, visitors can climb up to the onion dome of the tower from April to October and enjoy a wonderful panoramic view. This involves climbing 232 steps and ascending over 50 metres. But don't worry, thanks to the stops along the way with explanations, it's not strenuous. Those with a fear of heights, like me, need to overcome their fears on the last few steps, or rather ladders.

Unfortunately, I somehow deleted the photos of the view from the tower 😒.

It is exciting to see the bellows of the new organ, the vaulted ceiling from above and the roof truss. The latter would make the most beautiful loft ever. 😉

By the way: there is a kestrel nest in the tower. It is monitored by video , so you can check in on the falcons online via the webcam.

I really love the tours can be found on the website, where you can also find an overview of all other churches in Bavaria for which tours can be booked.

Well-deserved lunch break

In summary: If you are in Rosenheim and do not dine at Glückspilz essen geht, ist selbst schuld.

Not without white sausages!

As a self-confessed fan of the fun Bavarians, I have to admit: nothing they sell us in Austria as original Munich white sausages comes close to the Bavarian original. So I brought an extra-large bag with me to be able to stock up on as many as possible.

Go to Der Lohbergerbutcher's shop. This family-run business has a fantastic shop, and the sausages are – of course – freshly handmade. And the dry-aged T-bone steak in the display case wasn't bad either...

Some culture to take away, please!

I'm not much of a museum-goer. But the exhibition Pharaoh – Life in Ancient Egypt, which is being advertised everywhere, did catch my interest. It runs until 17 December 2017 at the Lokschuppen.

Once again, I was completely surprised by what Rosenheim has to offer. This interactive exhibition captivates visitors from the very first second. Huge projections, exciting explanations and fantastic artefacts (even a real mummy) ensure that there is never a dull moment. It is also a perfect outing for children.

I would have really missed out if I hadn't gone.

A delightful break

After a strenuous day of sightseeing, a refreshing coffee break is essential. Le Delizie – Pasticceria is run by an Italian family. The sweet temptations are a feast for the eyes, the ice cream is homemade, and the cappuccino... mmm! Just like Italy itself.

Rosenheim – much more than you would expect!

Rosenheim is my real surprise winner. Who would have thought that this small town had so much to offer? One thing is certain – if there is another exciting exhibition at the Lokschuppen, I will be there again.
